OTHER HEALTH INITIATIVES

‘Samvedna’

ADITHI has a programme of the State Women’s Development Corporation, titled ‘Samvedna’, in Chaturbhujsthan, Muzaffarpur. It provides counseling and first aid to cover RTI, STDs and HIV/AIDS. The Centre has a counselor and local outreach workers. Private lady doctors are also called whenever necessary.

Health Posts

Sakhi had 14 health posts in 30 villages which have been reduced to three central posts. There are 40 trained dais and 30 health promoters. They have helped to bring mortality at birth to 0 as compared to 1997.

Sanitation & Hygiene

Keeping in mind, the absence of lavatories in the villages for defecation, 74 latrines were constructed under the ADITHI-Plan project for better sanitation and hygiene. The construction of these latrines has led to a sense of ownership, improved social security, better sanitation and hygiene, reduction in the number of cases like accidents and snake bites and reduction in the cases of violence against women.

RCH Programme

The RCH project was given to ADITHI in the year 2001, and this is the third year of the programme. It is sponsored by the Department of Family Welfare, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI. ADITHI is the Mother NGO for the programme in three districts, namely Jehanabad, Gaya and Rohtas. The number of Field NGOs identified for the programme by ADITHI is 13. The target area covers 26 panchayats, 159 villages and a population of 1,98,432 people.

Initially FNGOs were identified, contacted and attached to the programme. The other activities undertaken year 2001 were –

a)     Conducting field appraisals and final selection of FNGOs

b)     Orientation workshops of the selected FNGOs and formulation of project proposals

c)      Orientation cum baseline survey training for project workers

d)     Project accountants’ training

e)     FNGOs animators training

Thereafter from January 2002, the project activities started. The Swastha Yauvan Mela was held in February of last year. The focus was now on the spacing methods and services being provided to pregnant mothers. The aid of wall writing was taken to spread the health and gender issues. The International Women’s Day was celebrated with the FNGOs with much fanfare. In the past year immunization to children and pulse polio campaign was initiated. IEC services in RCH were provided to the rural eligible couples and adolescents. Formation of village health committees and creating an enabling environment was laid stress on.

The programme includes training of dais, education of adolescents, street plays, etc and the programme covers both ante-natal and post-natal phases.

Modules have been developed on the following –

1). RCH

2). RCH issues for adolescents, specifying health, gender, rights of women and

girl children and ‘Status of women in Bihar’.

Besides under this programme, SHG formation, gender related advocacy and baseline survey of adolescents’ perceptions (via PRA) have been undertaken.
