GIRLS AND GIRL CHILDREN
v
An ADITHI
Plan Project, through the NFE centers and creches, the project is
trying to create a demand base at the grassroots for the very basic
right of education and health. A conscious effort is being made to
involve other stakeholders like the government officials at
different levels, PRI representatives, parent groups, community
based SHGs, and children themselves.
The end of the year caseload till June 2002 was 1425.
v
The girls
under difficult circumstances – tawaifs’ daughters in
Chaturbhujsthan in Bihar’s ‘red light area’ have been enrolled
in day care centers and night care centers (372 girls of 5 to 12
years) and their crafts – design bag-making, screen printing,
cross-stitch have blossomed. In the year, 2000-2001, the profit was
Rs.14.215/-, and in 2001-2002, the profit was Rs.19413; the profit
is now in Chaukhat’s account (their organization). This is also a
new model. Now we have begun work with tawaifs’ daughters
in Bettiah.
v
Chaukhat
– a self-help group of adolescent girls (tawaifs’ daughters) is
a new concept introduced. It is successfully running the crafts’
programme.
v
We are
working with 900 adolescent girls on Family Life Education, which is
also a new model.
v
The
children of the sex workers are given vocational training in
cross-stitch, screen printing, tailoring and in computer literacy.
v
The
American Centre, New Delhi has funded ADITHI for “education” for
about 900 girls through 15-20 animators, on family and society, RCH,
legal rights and vocational education. The programme is run through
centers in Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi and Patna districts.
v
Higher
education of rural girls is being promoted and one talented folk
artist from Bhusura is now studying in NIFT, New Delhi.
v
ADITHI
representatives are on the Home Committee of the Government of
India’s Short Stay Home – a project being run by Centre Direct,
a partner NGO of ADITHI’s on the periphery of Muzaffarpur town.
Here the women and girl children learn tailoring, embroidery, fabric
painting, flower making etc. A departmental store has been opened
near the SSH in order to provide employment opportunities to shelter
less women.
